The last in-store custom order I took was for an extra special handbag. Our client brought in several sentimental pieces given to her by beloved family members. Together she and I came up with this Edith bag design.
Her vintage black and white print paired nicely with green silk from our collection, and a unique vintage brooch from her grandmother brought the design together. I made two antique keys and a lock into a detachable key fob. Inside, I stitched a pretty hankie to the bag lining, for a sweet secret.
This was the perfect bag for me to make at this special time. I loved every minute of it!
I didn't expect our Saturday Sales to be so much fun! It is a little odd to be selling the fabrics and treasures that I have collected over the last 12+ years. However, the bustling festive atmosphere of each sale, paired with the happiness of finding well-suited homes for the goods, makes these sales happy events! Come talk crafts with us!
This Saturday, we'll have loads of new stuff, including our fancy fabrics - silks, brocades, chiffons, etc. We'll also have some cool vintage books, faux leather remnants, more ribbon, and other bits and baubles. I've also been making new jewelry each week to restock our popular styles. We're still gift-wrapping for free, so stock up on birthday presents!
Here is the official Facebook invite page.
We've had a blast at the two Saturday Sales we've hosted thus far. It's a big change to clear out my crafty stash by selling fabric, ribbon, and fixtures, but it feels terrific to find happy homes for the things I've collected and enjoyed over the last twelve years.
We have three more sales planned. Join us every Saturday in January from 11 to 5. We have new stock each week. Plus, I'm still making our signature jewelry line, so there is regular merchandise to see as well.
“I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes. Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You're doing things you've never done before, and more importantly, you're Doing Something.
So that's my wish for you, and all of us, and my wish for myself. Make New Mistakes. Make glorious, amazing mistakes. Make mistakes nobody's ever made before. Don't freeze, don't stop, don't worry that it isn't good enough, or it isn't perfect, whatever it is: art, or love, or work or family or life.
Whatever it is you're scared of doing, Do it.
Make your mistakes, next year and forever.”
― Neil Gaiman
The holiday season has always been the best time on our store! The hustle and bustle reminds us why we love what we do. This sentiment is especially pronounced in this, our finale season in our brick and mortar store. Since announcing the changes in our business model, we've seen so many of our long time customers as they stop by to shop and wish us well. It has been heartwarming and fun to connect and share memories. Thank you to all of those who have sent us notes, given us hugs, and have expressed well-wishes.
November 2014 was a busiest month ever! Custom design appointments were in such high demand that I set up a waiting list so that I didn't write more orders than our small team could fill. Of course, I don't relish turning away business, but I realize that I needed to be realistic about what we could sew! Luckily, I've been able to keep the store stocked with great gifts including our signature jewelry and infinity scarf line, as well as lots of our favorite goods by other manufacturers.
As for me, I'm sewing up a storm while soaking up these last weeks of what has been the most joyous twelve years of my life thus far. It's not easy to articulate how I feel about it all. Here's to a merry season savoring old memories while looking toward the future!
After twelve sweet years of shop keeping and bag making, I’m starting an exciting transition. I’ve been lucky enough to reach my retail goals over the last decade; now it’s time for me to pursue current dreams like travel and new professional and creative ventures.
Following the store closure, the Laura Bee brand will move to the web and will retain its wholesale line, as I focus on my jewelry collection and fundraiser projects.
You're invited to celebrate with us!
